Overview of PocketBook 740 Color
what can and what is suitable for the first reader in Russia with a large color screen Electronic ink. Over the past couple of years, I've written reviews of several Notebook readers. And in the comments to each of these reviews, they wrote: all this, they say, is good, but why are the screens black and white? When will color readers appear?! So in 2020, it happened! And for the second time. But-about everything in order.
The first book reader in the Russian Federation with the E Ink Kaleido display was the PocketBook 633 Color. This is the flagship model in the 6 " form factor. And in early 2021, the PocketBook 740 Color with a 7.8-inch display appeared on the shelves. This is the first model with an E Ink Kaleido screen of this diagonal-both in Russia and even in the world. And this is the real revolution. Why her?
A 6-inch screen is, of course, fine. But! This area is not enough for color content of many types. You have to either stare intently at the same comics or magazines, or scale the image with a multitouch. Both are not very convenient. Meanwhile, the 7.8-inch diagonal saves us from all this – you can just study the content without unnecessary gestures. And this is the whole thrill of the Color Notebook 740. This reader, let's just say, offers not just e-reading in color, but e-reading in color without compromise. An important point. In fact, we are now seeing the second appearance of color readers on the market.
The first happened in 2013, and very few people remember it today (or rather, very few people know about it at all). It was short-lived and not very successful. The manufacturers produced very few models with color screens, and they were very, very expensive. In fact, these were not so much mass-produced products as experimental ones, produced in extremely small numbers. The only color reader that was delivered to the Russian Federation and other CIS countries in 2013, during the first advent of color readers, was the PocketBook 801 Color Lux.
They asked for as much as 10 thousand rubles for it – then, very pre-crisis. Similar models with black-and-white screens were then offered for 5-6 thousand. That is half the price. I remember this device well – after all, I tested it 8 years ago and even wrote a review of it [https://club.dns-shop.ru/review/t-81-elektronnyie-knigi/7325-chitaem-v-tsvete-test-obzor-pocketbook-color-lux/]. I liked the PocketBook 801 Color Lux on the whole, although I also came to the conclusion that the E Ink color screen in that form was not very good for displaying color content. It was quite dim, darkish... In general, all the diseases of the "first pancake" took place in full! And I was not at all surprised when the topic of colored electronic ink was actually closed and forgotten.
PocketBook 801 Color Lux
Well, then fast forward to 2021. PocketBook 740 Color is estimated at 21,900 rubles. The PocketBook 740 Pro monochrome reader is similar in most parameters-at 19,900. Thus, the difference between a color and a non-color model is only 2 thousand rubles. (By the way, in the case of the pocket book 633 color and its non-color counterpart, the company PocketBook 632 Plus - and at all 1 thousand: 15,900 and 14,900.) And just based on this, we can predict that now, in 2021, color readers have come in earnest and for a long time.
Well, let me tell you about my impressions of the Color PocketBook 740. And also about what the E Ink Kaleido color display gives us. But first of all – a plate with technical characteristics. In the table I have collected all the 7.8-inch Notebook models. They look pretty much the same and offer a similar set of options. As you can see, the main innovation in the PocketBook 740 Color is the color screen. But everything else was more or less implemented earlier in other models. Well, as a result, it has become the norm for Notebook readers. Therefore, I will not describe the Color Notebook 740 below.. I'll concentrate on the main thing, the color display of Kaleido's e-ink. Well, then I will briefly go through other important features of the reader.
Kaleido Electronic Ink Screen: what it is and why it is needed. I will not delve into the technological wilds and tell you how this screen works. You can read this in other reviews of Color Notebook 740. Just in case, here is a picture that shows the structure of this display and shows how the image is formed. In my opinion, it is much more important to know the following. The E Ink color screen has the same advantages as the monochrome one. There are three of them. The first is that it is harmless to the eyes. In other words, with the PocketBook 740 Color, reading is pleasant and comfortable – as if you are studying an ordinary paper book.
The second is excellent behavior in the sun: the screen does not glare and does not fade. The third is efficiency. You need to charge this pocket book about once a month or a month and a half. It can be stated: with the advent of color, the traditional advantages of readers have not gone away, and this, in my opinion, is a big plus.
As for the image that a color pocketbook is able to show, the situation with it is as follows. Do not expect a riot of colors from any reader with E Ink Kaleido. In terms of images, this is not a smartphone or tablet. PocketBook 740 Color shows a picture of the "high-quality color newspaper" level, and the color palette here is only 4,096 shades. That is, the colors of the pocketbook are not bright, but muted. That's what Kaleido technology is all about-and there's nothing you can do about it. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with this "fading". When reading, it is not a riot of colors that is important, but simply an understanding of the color in which one or another part of the document or drawing in the book is painted. Here are, say, a couple of charts on a PocketBook 740 Color and on a black-and-white PocketBook 740. Do we need brightness and juiciness here? Unlikely: you need to make it clear which segment has which fill.
It's the same with comics – reading them in at least some color is more pleasant than in monochrome. Comics, by the way, are often printed on cheap paper, and the E Ink Kaleido screen imitates this paper very reliably. Magazines? Well, you get it. In color, they look much more natural than in black and white. For children's books, the company PocketBook 740 color is also great - unlike black-and-white readers, which, due to the" boredom " of the pictures, children do not like at all. The main thing is that children do not set their eyes directly from childhood. And then I knew people who buy cheap tablets, give them to children aged 3 to 5 – and then are surprised that these children's eyesight deteriorates. Well, that's just not surprising! It's better to hand them a PocketBook 740 Color-and you can look at the pictures, and it's harmless to the eyes. Electronic textbooks-see the photo below-also look more interesting and informative on the PocketBook 740 Color.
More precisely, not even so. For textbooks, a color display is generally necessary. Otherwise, how will you, for example, study the world map? Or textbooks on biology and astronomy? And here you just have another bright juicy photo on two readers. Just for the sake of understanding, what is the difference between an E-ink color screen and a black-and-white one?In general, what is the perfect reader for the company's PocketBook 740 color? Comics, books for children, color documents with a dense layout, the Internet-all this on this device looks better than on any monochrome readers. And perhaps the most important thing: yes, if you choose a reader for reading in color, then the 7.8-inch model will be a more correct choice than the 6-inch one. The screen area and its higher resolution here, as they say, decide. Color content, by its very nature, involves dense arrays of information with a bunch of small details. And for all this, it is necessary to have a large-format display. While 6 inches is still, after all, a compromise.
At the same time, the color pocketbook software has a number of interesting options that use the ability to work with color. These are, for example, notes: words, phrases and sentences in color can now be not just highlighted, but highlighted using one of the four colors. You read a book and, say, you mark the mentions of one hero in yellow, and the second one in pink. In addition, it is allowed to leave handwritten notes – and they can also be colored. There are also a couple of applications focused on working with color. First, the coloring book: poke your finger on the elements – and they are painted in the specified color. Children like it, and some adults like it, too. There is also a drawing machine – here no one gives ready-made pictures, draw yourself from scratch what you want. Implemented a fun drawing game, just such a mini-photoshop.Well, I'll also say this. First.
The background of the E Ink Kaleido screen is slightly grayer than the usual black-and-white pocketbooks. It's true. But you can only notice this when you compare two readers – color and black-and – white-head-on. If you do not compare, then this grayness does not catch your eye. The second important point. The screen resolution of the PocketBook 740 Color is 1872 x 1404 pixels (300 ppi). However, the color fragments on the E Ink Kaleido screen are displayed at a resolution of 100 ppi. In other words, the color images are slightly loose – just one in one, like printing on newsprint. Someone may not like it, but I will say this: just do not expect that you will get a reader with a screen like a conventional iPad. If you want a screen like the iPad, then buy it. And if you need a device with a harmless paper-like screen, and even color, then the color of the PocketBook 740 is exactly what you need. And, despite all the features of E Ink Kaleido, this model has enough advantages, and its price does not frighten at all.
Well, to summarize this section, you can say this: the era of electronic reading in color in readers has begun. 6-inch models could be considered a preparatory stage before its onset, but the 7.8-inch reader of the company PocketBook 740 color-just that its onset. And at the same time, it is quite a real revolution in the world of readers – and I do not exaggerate or play with words at all. At the same time, I must note that in terms of brightness, juiciness and eye-pleasing, the PocketBook 740 Color is much cooler than the PocketBook 801 Color Lux 2013.
And if the latter seemed to me at the time rather a bold experiment, then the PocketBook 740 Color is already a "user-friendly", comfortable device in every sense.
Other features of PocketBook 740 Color
1. Illumination. It is white here, without the possibility of putting lemon or orange colors. This is understandable: if a relatively faded image is not illuminated with white, then the colors can already be very distorted. Although, it may not be so... You can't check it! But personally, I don't think that the lack of color temperature adjustment is a serious drawback of the PocketBook 740 Color.
2. Software. It is, as usual for pocketbooks, very fancy. This applies to the convenience of the menu as a whole, and the number of supported formats of books and documents (as many as two dozen), and branded services. If you want a browser, please, if you want to sync your reading and library positions with your smartphone, and it's there, if you want to customize your desktop, here! In general, the Linux-based firmware, which is used in all modern pocketbooks, leaves a very pleasant impression. A car of options, a lot of settings, complete omnivore in terms of formats...
And at the same time, it is also quite a decent speed of work – despite 1 gig of RAM and a percentage with 2 cores. Android readers need twice as much RAM and twice as many cores to achieve this speed. At the same time, the battery life of Android readers will be much shorter.
3. Battery life. It, to be honest, is not as long as that of black-and-white pocketbooks. Simply, if you read not in the bright sun, but, for example, in the dark or under room lighting, then a color reader needs a brighter backlight to demonstrate a juicy picture. Roughly speaking, where a black – and-white model is 50% enough, a color model is 80%. Well, it turns out that in the case of the PocketBook 740 Color, you can count on a month of reading with a backlight – instead of a month and a half for a black-and-white pocketbook. (And instead of a couple of weeks in the case of Android readers from other manufacturers, by the way!) On the other hand, if you read without a backlight, then an extremely powerful 2,900 mAh battery will give you two and a half months of work. And this is one and a half times more than in black-and-white models, if they are also read without illumination.
4. Audio Capabilities. You can a) listen to music; b) listen to audiobooks; c) translate text to speech. If everything is clear with the first two functions, then the third one needs to be explained. Open the file with the text (FB2, EBUP, etc.), click on the magic button, and the reader begins to pronounce the text in a voice. 17 languages are supported, including Russian. The sound can be output via Bluetooth or by wire to the speaker or headphones. The adapter "USB Type-C –> 3.5 mm"is included.5. Ergonomics. The reader is small and light – 225 grams in total. The frames around the screen are narrow, and the "beard" under it is small; at the same time, the developers managed to put the keys there, which makes the reader management very convenient. If you want-from the screen scroll through the pages, if you want - from the buttons. In general, without spreading the thought on the tree, I will say this: PocketBook 740 Color-the device is convenient and compact, and also very neatly assembled. In other words, I have no complaints about its body. In the photo below, the PocketBook 740 Color is next to the 6-inch PocketBook 632 Aqua. The difference in size is not so great. As an output
PocketBook 740 Color is difficult to criticize – only the lack of IP certification can be reproached. The model does not have any protection against liquids (in other top-end "pockets" it is available).
And so the device causes only positive emotions. And not only thanks to the large color screen, which, of course, are the key advantage of the model. The PocketBook 740 Color is also good in other areas: it is quite compact, it is well assembled, it can play MP3, and it offers two control options-push-button and touch. The Poketbook bookstore also makes a positive impression... Like other native pocketbook chips like the PocketBook Cloud service for sharing files with smartphones, support for two dozen book formats and an extended warranty (2 years minimum and even 3, if you take on pocketbook.ru).
But the main thing, of course, is the large color screen of E Ink. The difference with the PocketBook 801 Color Lux is radical – in favor of the PocketBook 740 Color. You can read anything from the latter – from comics to textbooks-and you don't feel any discomfort.
At the same time, you will only have to pay a couple of thousand for the color: the hero of this review costs 21,990 rubles against 19,990 in the case of the 740 Pro model, which has a non-color E Ink Carta screen.
